Wildlife Tracks & Traces – Fish Creek Provincial Park, Calgary

Wildlife Tracks & Traces is a one-day, field-based workshop focused on identifying the tracks and sign of all types of wildlife. With practice and training, we can all learn to interpret the tracks, scats, and other clues that wildlife leave on the landscape.

Time / Duration: 9:00 am to ~4:00 pm

Location: Meet at Hull’s Wood Parking in Fish Creek Provincial Park

Skill Level: Beginner to expert trackers will all enjoy this workshop – no experience necessary

  • Nature-curious of all levels and abilities welcome!
  • Perfect for ecology students, wildlife researchers, and environmental consultants with any level of tracking knowledge or experience.
  • Ideal training for those working towards a certification in Track & Sign.

What to Expect:

Your instructor, Joseph Litke is a Wildlife Biologist, Certified Wildlife Tracker, and Hiking Guide. To some extent, nature will set the syllabus for this workshop; we will explore as a group, and investigate the mysteries that we find.

  • Learn to recognise key characteristics in track patterns
  • Learn key differentiating and diagnostic features in animal tracks
  • Read speed in footprints and track patterns
  • Discussions on scat identification
  • Practice a scientific approach to tracking

What to Bring:

  • Weather-appropriate, field-worthy clothing and footwear
  • Rain gear and extra clothes, sun screen and sun hat
  • Food and drink for the day
  • Camera/phone, notebook and pencil
  • A sense of adventure and curiosity

Note:

  • Participants are responsible for their own transportation, food, and drink.
  • The workshop will consist of a long day outside, and will continue through unpleasant weather
  • A reasonable level of physical fitness is needed to endure a full day in the field
  • Public washrooms are on site, though activities may occur some distance away
  • Finding tracks sometimes means getting muddy, field-worthy clothes and durable, waterproof footwear are advised.

  • A condition of your participation in this event will be signing an acknowledgement of the physical requirements, signing a waiver, provision of a personal cell phone number and emergency contact, and completion of a medical information form.
